The Honours and Awards Committee is pleased to announce that the ASSH Student Article Award (2023-2025) has been won by Ruby Ekkel for her article “The Meaning of a Bushwalk with the Melbourne Women’s Walking Club” which was published in Australian Historical Studies on 14 October 2024 (https://doi.org/10.1080/1031461X.2024.2406839).

Ruby is a PhD Candidate in the School of History at The Australian National University. Ruby presented this work to the Australian Historical Association conference in 2023 where she was awarded the Ken Inglis Prize for best paper by a postgraduate student.

The ASSH judges praised “The Meaning of a Bushwalk” as a “beautiful representation of women’s bushwalking leading up to, and including, the second world war.” They noted that the article “captures the emotions of the women bushwalkers” while also “disrupting the gendering” of the bushwalking movement” and presenting “an emergent version of modern Australian femininity.”
